Chapter Eleven

June 9, 1813

Sebastian glared at each servant he encountered in the corridors that night as he made his way through the manor to the music room where his pianoforte was kept. Even over twenty-four hours after he’d finally bedded his wife, he was in a foul mood, and all because she’d wanted to talk about his past and he was afraid.

No, it went deeper than that. He was terrified. Not because of what had happened—though he remained regretful and guilty—but for how Evangeline might see him.

The things he’d done, some of them at least, were unforgivable, and any sane person would eye him askance. Wanting acceptance and redemption had made him hopeful, but he rather doubted either of those things were his lot.

Yet that time he’d spent with her last evening with her in his bed, her wrists restrained and tied to his headboard, seeing her reactions and the emotions in her eyes as he’d teased her had been beyond his expectations. The fact she’d gone along with his intentions and had let him render her semi-immobile had made him slightly humbled, but since he’d already ushered her toward that edge all week, it hadn’t surprised him, and when she’d begged him to give her all of him, he’d inadvertently lost a piece of himself to her.

Did she understand why he felt the need to always be in control of anything carnal? There was no way of knowing unless he talked with her, and that was something he’d never been good at since his mother had died.

When his mind was especially cluttered and inundated with things that made him feel bad, he retreated to the music room. After a couple hours of playing, he should be in a different frame of thinking and willing to perhaps seek Evangeline out, for he’d purposefully ignored her all day, though he had watched her a bit from the portrait gallery windows when she’d gone into his mother’s gardens. The urge to ask for her forgiveness had almost spurred his steps in that direction, but he’d curbed the action.

Couldn’t admit he’d been wrong.

He’d wished to go down to dinner with her but decided against it. And that had made him irrationally annoyed. What was it about his wife that was changing even how he thought? Besides, what would he have said? Yes, he owed her an apology, and once he saw the tears in her eyes, the disappointment, he would have been done for. Never would he have cared about any of that, never would have given thought to how others perceived him. Gossip and opinions didn’t matter.

Now, suddenly, they did, especially where she was concerned.

What is happening to me?

Oh, but he suspected, and he wanted to fight it at all costs. Somehow, Evangeline had gotten beneath his skin, and despite everything, despite his horrible past, despite the man he was, despite his unconventional tastes in bed sport, he was in the beginning stages of falling for her, in danger of going tip over tail for his wife.
